Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul University (JKKNIU)Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University was established by the Government of Bangladesh on 09 May 2006, though the initiative for its establishment was taken some years before, firstly by a non-official group of socio-cultural local elites, namely Greater Mymensingh Cultural Forum. The university was originally conceived to be built as the first cultural university in Bangladesh, but the JKKNIU Act enacted in 2006 made it a general university with a special focus on liberal-cum-performing arts education and research. Begum Rokeya University (BRUR)Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur is the only university in Rangpur divisional town. This university is the result of long days’ movement and demand of mass people of this area. This university was started in 2001 during the period of then Awamileague Government in the name of ‘Rangpur Science and Technology University’ .The then government laid the foundation stone of this university. But the next BNP- Jamat alliance Government stopped the activities of Rangpur Science and Technology University. As a result this prospective university has not got its practical form. Later a university in the name of ‘Rangpur University’ was established on 12th October in 2008 by the then Care- Taker Government on demand of all walks of people of Rangpur. Here, it needs to mention that Rangpur University was established on the land acquired by Awamileague Government in 2001. Rangpur University was renamed as ‘Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur’ by grand alliance government in 2009. Barisal University (BU)The declaration for establishing a Public University in the then Barishal division was made by the Founder of Bangladesh, the Father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1973. Several half-hearted attempts were made by the different political governments after 1980s but it was in 2009 that the establishment of the University got meaningfully underway by the Ministry of Education, and the Honorable President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Md. Zillur Rahman appointed Professor Dr. Md. Harunor Rashid Khan of the Department of Soil, Water and Environment of the University of Dhaka on 18th February 2010 as the Project Director to establish the University of Barishal. The law of the University of Barishal has been amended and passed by the National Assembly of Bangladesh on 16th June 2010. Thanks to further initiatives from University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Education, the University was eventually established by the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through foundation stone laying on 22nd February 2011. Then the University of Barishal started functioning from the first day of July 2011 in a temporary campus at college buildings of Barishal Zilla School. Honorable President Md. Zillur Rahman and Professor Dr. Md. Harunor Rashid Khan adorned the chairs of the Founder Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor respectively. In the first academic year (2011-2012) there are four faculties; Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Business Studies that include six departments. In the first academic session (2011-2012), there will be four hundred students, twenty five teachers, fifteen officers and thirty five staffs. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University (BDU)Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University, Bangladesh-Bangladesh’s first specialized Government digital university. On 26 July 2016, the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh enacted a law in the National Assembly to establish this university on a 50-acre site adjacent to Bangabandhu Hi-Tech Park in Kaliakair, Gazipur District. On June 12, 2018, Professor of Civil Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering, former Vice-Chancellor of the National University and former Vice-Chancellor of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), Professor Dr. Munaz Ahmed Noor was appointed as the first Vice Chancellor of the University by His Excellency the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and the Chancellor of the Universities of Bangladesh Md. Sheikh Hasina University (SHU)Sheikh Hasina University of Netrokona (Bengali: শেখ হাসিনা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is a government financed public university of Bangladesh. On 30 January 2017 in regular cabinet meeting, chaired by prime minister, agreed in principle to the Acts for the Sheikh Hasina University in Netrokona District. The initial plan was to set up a science and technology university in Netrokona, but it was later revised to a ‘general’ university, offering courses in arts, commerce other than science. At present, there are a total of 38 public universities in the country and the number will stand at 40 with the new two university. Shahajalal University of Science and Technology (SUST)After a long struggle and a relentless movement, the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was established in 1986. The only university of its kind at that time, it started it’s career on the 1st Phalgun(13th of February 1991) with only three departments: Physics, Chemistry and Economics, 13 teachers and 205 students. It has now expanded to 7 schools, 27 departments and two institutes. The number of teachers has grown to 552 and the students to 10922. Besides, the University has 13 affiliated medical colleges under the School of Medical Sciences with 4000 students. SUST introduced the integrated honours course for the first time in Bangladesh. It introduced the semester system from the 1996-97 session and there was a remarkable improvement in the quality of education after the introduction of this system, which was visible even in the national arena. Every student from SUST has to take two language courses, one in Bangla and the other one in English. Every student also has to take two computer courses, one for computer literacy and the other to learn a computer language. The computer center of SUST offers courses to every employees and one can say, without any hesitation that SUST is the most IT enabled university in this country. SUST has started it’s graduate programs by offering masters degree to graduating bachelors of most of the departments. It is difficult to start a world-class research program without a well funded graduate school, even then the teachers of SUST are trying to create a research environment in the campus. Two research journals are published regularly from SUST, one in Bangla and the other one in English where a few hundred research papers are submitted every year. Several departments have hosted International Conferences and are planning to organize similar events in the near future.
